Mel's Procrastination Palace
Wednesday, July 27, 2005 Man, am I tired...

... of starting blogs with an excuse about having nothing to blog about. Seriously. Maybe I should make something happen so I can blog about it.

However, I was proud of myself for not succumbing to temptation and doing the Happy Bunny quiz that Shannon did. Of course, part of me is still upset that the wicked looking dragon graphic refused to show its face.

Breakfast with the bitches was quiet this morning. We made plans for RT Florida next year and discussed some writing loops. Totally without being bitchy, can you believe it? Of course, Jaci's off to Reno for the RWA conference, Shan and Mandy were simply playing hookey (get UP already!).

When we all get there, Daytona will never be the same. :)

And since Shan was kind of enough to send my inner editor into convulsions with her post about overused words, I'm going to go obsess and study my latest WIP for repetitiveness. OY!

PS. I'm going to take it as a sign that spell check wanted to change hookey to hooch. Now we know the TRUTH about why Shan and Mandy were absent. Bitches! They need to SHARE!

Friday, July 22, 2005 What mythological form are you?

Thanks Angie... had fun procrastinating with this. Fun!

dra
You are Form 5, Dragon: The Weaver.

"And The Dragon seperated the virtuous from
the sinful. He tore his eyes from his sockets
and used them to peer into the souls of those
on trial to make a judgement. He knew that
with endless knowledge came endless
responsibility."

Some examples of the Dragon Form are Athena
(Greek), St. Peter (Christian), and Surya
(Indian).
The Dragon is associated with the concept of
intelligence, the number 5, and the element of
wood.
His sign is the crescent moon.

As a member of Form 5, you are an intelligent and
wise individual. You weigh options by looking
at how logical they are and you know that while
there may not always be a right or wrong
choice, there is always a logical one. People
may say you are too indecisive, but it's only
because you want to do what's right. Dragons
are the best friends to have because they're
willing to learn.

Wednesday, July 20, 2005 I suppose I should blog

...about something. I was thinking of talking about the benefits of critique partners, having FINALLY had the chance to exchange chapters with my long time friend and CP Jaci Burton. But since I know she'll be the first to comment with two words "It's crap," I won't tell you how awed I am by her wonderful imagination and inspired I am by her brilliant characterization is. I think *I* learn from reading and critting her stories as much as I hope she takes from any notes I make.

The muse visited me the other morning, hijacking any thoughts I had of starting the gigantuan task of rewriting my first book. (A monstrosity that will never see light of day in the state its in, but one I love wholeheartedly.) Instead, while showering, the entire story popped into my head and characters started babbling. I barely dried off, toss on my robe and sat in front of my computer, spewing ideas onto a blank Word doc until I was nearly late for work. (And talk about having a bad hair day--I totally skipped all my normal morning routines for the sake of bowing to the muse's demands. Bitch.

Mornings are dedicated, mostly, to gabbing with the breakfast bitches over cyber coffee. Some days we live up to our name, other days we're just a bunch of women sharing websites, discussing blog entries and good books. I couldn't imagine a morning without this little social gathering.

And with that, I should get back to work. Just got the bottom line on my daughter's orthodontic bill yesterday. O.M.G. Guess I'll keep the day job a little longer...

Thursday, July 14, 2005 In case you were wondering....

Yes, this is a writer's blog. Don't let the influx of sexy men distract you. Me -n- the Breakfast Bitches needed some inspiration, ya know? Plus, please lift your eyes to review the name of this place. Wahlah--see?

Truth be told, the summer sucks for writing. The Dear Husband, hereafter known as DH, is hard at work on the Chevelle, often requiring my assistance. (Mel, the grand power tool goddess...) It's light so late, that by the time I'm ready to settle in to write, it's nearly bedtime. And then there's the case of the muse who thinks she still gets a summer vacation. Oh, she's half interested, understanding the need to be productive. Unfortunately, her train of thought derailed a few weeks ago and she's facedown in the keyboard, snoring. (Oh God, I typed snowing there.... no, no, no--not SNOW!)

(I think this blog demonstrates quite well the ramblings of my attention span. No?)

So... welcome to the Palace, where Procrastination is the event of the day.

Wednesday, July 06, 2005 Since this is the procrastination place...

I thought I'd let you know what I've been doing (aka, not writing or editing) The only bad thing is that my editor knows the location of my blog *waves to Bree*...

But, I consider it research--NO, not that kind, tho I suppose it wouldn't be wrong to say that did occupy a bit of my time this last weekend *g*.... totally TMI, I know, I know. Jaci's fault, she's SOOO rubbed off on me.

Anyway, anyone who knows me knows I LURVE middle ages stuff. As in, we have swords--real, sharp, heavy swords--decorating our medieval style basement. (And this hunky picture of Adrian Paul in a kilt, but I digress...) So, I've been eyeing up this book, A Connecticut Fashionista in King Arthur's Court, since RT, where I won it (Thanks Marianne Mancusi for your generosity!!!)...

Honestly? I like chick lit, really I do. And I like historical. I have to say I was definitely skeptical that I was going to appreciate THIS. And as an under-educated chick lit fan, I will honestly tell you that I've NO clue what the hell Manolo's are, other than some brand of shoe. Never seen a pair, and I'd NEVER, EVER pay more than $50 for a pair of shoes--and those will be top of the line cross trainers with the SWOOSH on em, thanks. So right there, I cannot empathize with some little NY snob running around whining about scuffing some leather. Get OVER it, k?

Thank goodness I never had to do that with Marianne Mancusi's creation, Kat. While there were a few moments I rolled my eyes, it wasn't so bad that I wanted to kick Kat's ass and just take Lance for myself. Talk about a freaking wet dream. Lance was HOT. More than hot. Daaaaaaayum. I mentioned I liked swords right? Hot men carrying swords REALLY do it for me. *pant*pant* Okay, so we've established I don't wanna kill Kat and could so do Lance, so what about plot?

It's great, really...I loved the visuals, the true grit that Mancusi painted. It wasn't all fairy talish or over done. Camelot was indeed, real, with it's drawbacks and benefits--it fit the story and even better, fit the image in my mind. Being familiar with the legend (at least a dozen versions of it) I have to say I had my own sense of dying to know how she made it work. While I truly suspected what was going to happen to foil things, I wasn't disappointed when it happened, because there was much more to it.

Only thing that disappointed was the very ending. Damn. I'd worked myself up to see..well, what she led us to believe we were going to see, and wham--- HUH? Marianne, dearest, tell me you DO intend to write the sequel for this....

My opinion? Read it, love it, email Marianne and ask when book two hits the shelves.
The bottom line--it felt more like a romance than a chick-lit. Swear to God. But that's a good thing for me. :)
